What is a pour over?
Pour overs or drippers originate from Asia and are currently one of the most popular methods of preparing coffee. It is a grooved funnel (most often ceramic) from which the coffee drips through a paper filter directly into a cup.
How did the dripper come about?
The history of the pour over method goes back to early 20th century, when Melitta Bentz invented her first paper coffee filter in 1908. The original dripper was a simple metal strainer with a paper filter. The dripper was then redesigned into its modern form, with a ceramic or glass cone-shaped funnel that allows for better coffee extraction in the 1930s’.
The optimal flow of hot water poured over coffee grounds leading to excellent taste and aroma is best achieved by a 60 degree angle design.
The pour over remains a popular coffee-making tool to this day, mainly due to its simplicity and ability to produce a delicious beverage. Modern drippers have become iconic in coffee culture and are the preferred tool for quality coffee enthusiasts.
